medical office assistant – The duties of a medical office assistant will vary depending on the type of medical practice they are working at. They may answer phones, file medical records, work with insurance companies or even do basic clinical work. The work is varied and interesting. The pay will vary depending on the practice but the median falls between $25,000-$30,000. Training can be done at local community colleges and is usually 1 -2 years long.
Medical Transcribers – Medical transcribers listen to tapes or digital files and transcribe them into written reports. These tapes and digital files usually consist of medical procedures, autopsy reports and similar documents. This work can be done at home or in an office. Training courses can be done at local community colleges or medical transcription schools. It can take up to 2 years depending on the course.
Retraining as a medical office assistant or a medical transcriber is a great career move and can make moving on from a layoff easier.
